Do You Need to Identify or Reawaken Your Passion?  |  Success Tip

Success Tip
“A musician must make music and a painter must paint.
A poet must write if he’s ultimately at peace with him¬self.
What a man can be he must be.”
—Abraham Maslow

When it comes to our occupation, passion gives us great work satisfaction and higher levels of psychological well-being. Maslow believed that instead of full-time introspection in a cave by oneself, that all of his self-actualizing subjects were motivated by some great and important work.

  • Have you forgotten why you became a nurse in the first place?
  • Does your job still feel important or are you just going through the motions?
  • Is the passion you once felt dormant or extinguished?

40% of nurses are burned out. The compassion that was once the primary motivation for working with patients has been lost. Nurses are exhausted with the needs in their work setting and in their home life. Some nurses may need to find ways to rediscover their passion and other nurses might need help in identifying their passions.
The following exercise gives you some things to think about and may give insight to your passions.

  • If you had unlimited resources, time, money, information and energy what would you do?

  • List three characteristics or descriptions that best describe you. Family members or friends may help out here.

To help you get started, here are my responses:

  • If you had unlimited resources, time, money, information and energy what would you do?
    • No doubt, the answer to the first question is helping people. The vehicle that I’ve driven to express this has changed throughout my life; however, the gas that makes the car go has always been my desire to help. Help, encourage and entertain more people.
  • List three characteristics or descriptions that best describe you.
    • My husband says I’m nurturing, decisive and serious. However, my husband thinks he’s funnier than I am, so I feel that influenced his description of me as serious. My family and friends tell me I’m funny.
  • List three people you admire.
    • There are three famous women I greatly admire and about whom I have read everything I can. They are Florence Nightingale, Erma Bombeck and Julia Child. At first blush you may think they are quite different but they’re actually very much the same. All were late bloomers. Each had a passion that they had to express; each was very talented and gifted. Each wrote and connected with a wide audience, touching millions of lives. Each had a clear love and value of family and each had a delightful sense of humor and were great fun to be around.

Make sure to answer those first three questions and then move on to the next set:

  • What do you love to do? List as many things as you can and pick two or three that you love the most.

  • What are you good at? List where you excel now and where you excelled in the past.

  • What would you love to teach?

  • What do you love to learn?

After completing these questions, are you able to draw any parallels or intersecting lines? In writing down the answers to these questions, often you can see connections that you weren’t able to see before. When you find them, reaching your dreams isn’t quite the stretch you thought it would be. You deserve a life that you are excited about and if you don’t have it, it’s time to create it. You can move from burnout to bliss.
