Innovative Improvement Solutions
Nursing was never my first choice as a career. I loved writing and wanted to be a broadcast journalist. After two years of community college I was awarded a scholarship to Columbia University for journalism. However, unbeknownst to me a family event was about to change the course of my life. My grandmother suffered a heart attack and lay dying in the ICU of the hospital where I worked as an administrative secretary. Seeing the tubes coming out of her from all direction, IV bags being pumped into her and the sound of bells ringing on machines was more than I could bear. Not know what was going on with her made me feel so helpless and useless to the point that I said to myself, “I will never feel like this again!” Thank goodness my grandmother survived; so needless to say, I felt compelled to take care of her and made the difficult decision to give up my journalism scholarship at Columbia University and embark into a new career— Nursing. I’ve been in healthcare for 33+ years and worked as a registered nurse for 26 years with over 10 years of nursing leadership experience.
Currently, I am the Senior Vice President and Co-Founder at Innovative Improvement Solutions, LLC. My expertise is in clinical patient care, nursing unit management, quality and performance improvement, and nursing workflow and throughput. Other leadership and management experience includes Labor and Delivery units, Post-Partum unit, Newborn nursery unit, Neonatal Intensive Care unit, and Progressive Care Surgical patient unit. She also served as Nursing Director covering the Medical-Surgical and Telemetry patient care units in large facilities. I also work part time as a Nursing Administrator covering hospital operations on the off shifts and weekends. Recently, I was offered an Adjunct Professor position to teach Master degree classes with Central Michigan University Global Campus and Online programs.
I obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Hunter College in 2003, Master degree in Health Service Administration from Central Michigan University (CMU) in 2014. I am currently enrolled in the Doctor of Health Administration and Graduate International Health Certificate programs at CMU with an anticipated graduation date of December 2018.
My U.S. health policy and public health research includes seminars at National Institutes of Health, Bethesda MD and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta GA. My recent global health experience includes work with an international non-government organization (NGO) in rural Belize; completion of comparative health services research abroad at the University of South Wales, and National Health Service in Cardiff Wales. In addition, my health policy and strategy research extended to sessions at the World Health Organization (WHO), with visits to the United Nations (UN), and International Commission of the Red Cross, all located in Geneva Switzerland.
A few of my professional affiliations include American Nurses Association, American Organization of Nurse Executives, American College of Healthcare Executives, Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses, Global Health Council, National Nurses in Business Association, and Medical Reserve Corp Member.
